Should this occur again, please do not hesitate to contact me via another listing, via my website or FaceBook. I continue to pursue the issue to higher levels in hope of finding someone with a sense of logic who might be in a position of authority and able to address the problem. Item #18089 Compagnie Générale Transatlantique Cristal Saint-Louis St.
Louis Crystal Decanter and Six (6) Burgundy Wine Stems Circa 1958. This is an amazing set part of a large lot of CGT crystal that was part of the Mather estate. Mather did have steamship connections (owner of the Pickands-Mather Line of the Great Lakes) but how or why the family acquired such a collection from the French Line remains unknown. The Saint-Louis pattern is named Jersey. Jersey items have been traced to the Liberté, the Ile de France and the France of 1962 though rarely are top-marked items attributed to the later vessel.
These wine glasses are etched with the CGT crest in a style first seen on the Normandie. The decanter is bottom-marked only, likely due to the fact that the deep cuts leave little room for a large logo.I was unable to get a clear image of the mark on the decanter, but it is there! Those of you familiar with Saint-Louis crystal will already be aware of its substantial weight.
The decanter alone weighs in excess of 6 lbs. And the total weight of the set is approximately 10.2 lbs. The decanter measures 11.25 in height with its stopper in place.
Just a note: both the bottom of the stopper and the neck of the decanter are hand-engraved (very small) with the matching number 15. The burgundy wine stems stand 5.125 in height. Obviously these items were used (there were a few chipped pieces in the lot) but these six stems are perfect. The interior of the decanter exhibits some cloudiness or bloom, visible in some areas more than others. For the sake of accuracy I will also state that there is an extremely tiny scratch on the lip. There are no chips, cracks or rough edges. This is indeed a rare opportunity, especially for those who not only display their collections but enjoy putting them to use!
